    The Bamunu mask is made out of natural Balzac wood. This mask represents the typical Sri Lankan character of the good old days and these handmade masks are found in different sizes, shapes, and representations. These masks are not used in traditional stage dramas but as good souvenirs and artistic decorations. The golden greenish color gives it an antic look. It would be an ideal decoration because it would give vintage allure and value wherever it is displayed, and it could be either a home or a business place. It looks very calm and quiet, sometimes like a hermit

    In Sri Lanka’s good old days, people worshipped trees, stones, the Sun, the Moon, and many other mythical things, leading to strong beliefs in spiritual powers.

    This type of mask does not have a mythical relationship with daemons or any spiritual power, but it is a marvelous artistic creation that gives value to the place where it is displayed and is also a fantastic gift item and a souvenir to be offered.

    The artists carve a vast range of ‘Bamunu Masks’ though you see a similarity at first glance, these are different from each other. Sometimes artists use a branch, a log, a stem, or a root of a Balzac tree that they find and carve according to the shape of the natural branch to give it a more artistic value 

    You can see the shape of the face; the long beard, the ears, and the turban on the head are different in each mask. The sharp, long nose and wide forehead give a more intelligent look to the carving. The artists not only carve a wonderful creation but also apply colors with ideal shading to give an attractive value to the mask.

    Sri Lankan masks are generally in different shapes & styles. Some are having long, narrow, and pointy faces. Facial expressions on the Bamunu Masks are quite tranquil.
