Description
Traditional rice varieties have been conserved, developed, and used by Sri Lankan farmers for over 3000 years. The varieties of rice passed down from preceding generations are known as ‘traditional’, ‘indigenous,” or ‘inheritance’ rice varieties of Sri Lanka. Once, renowned as the Granary of the East, Sri Lanka cultivates more than a thousand traditional rice varieties. These traditional paddy varieties have strong characteristics that help them survive climate change impacts such as droughts, heavy rains, and floods, compared to newer varieties used in chemical-intensive paddy cultivation. This vigor is based on certain characteristics unique to traditional paddy varieties.
Experts say that, in terms of nutritional content, texture, appearance, and aroma, and most importantly, in terms of taste, traditional rice, unlike any other rice, is much more resilient to Sri Lanka’s increasing extreme weather and can offer higher health benefits to its consumers.
It does not need chemical fertilizer, as the technology harnesses the natural forces to their maximum potential by using natural sources of fertilizer such as compost. The technology itself looked after the pests and diseases, and no agrochemicals were needed, such as pesticides, herbicides, etc.
Many of the traditional varieties of Sri Lankan rice known to contain higher amounts of glutamic acid, higher concentrations of vitamins, richer in fiber, and having a lower glycemic index that were instrumental in nurturing a healthy society were lost to the country.
This is a wholesome red rice variety that, when cooked, takes on a deep, rich burgundy colour. It is rich in nutrients and proteins and is an excellent choice for your everyday meal.
Pachchaperumal is known to be a perfect diet for those with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
What it contains: Pachchapurumal rice
It contains more proteins, vitamins, and micronutrients, and it is recommended for daily consumption. The grain is rich in antioxidant agents. Ancient people used to give cooked rice on occasions of almsgiving. Some sweets can be produced by using the flour of this rice grain. The intake of cooked rice of this variety helps to cool the body. This is good for patients who are suffering from diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, especially for patients with high blood pressure. It can control the activity of nephrons and ensure the proper function of the excretory system. Some enzymes and hormones are produced for the development of red blood cells. It helps to increase the production of insulin and reduce the production of thyroxin in the body. More nutrias gruel or congee can be produced by blending these varieties with some other common rice varieties.
Rice has one of the lowest glycemic indexes (GI), which averages less than 40 while the GI value of white rice is over 60! While the daily bread you eat has over a 70 GI value, which means Pachchaperumal makes the blood glucose levels rise the slowest among all rice and wheat varieties.
Pachchaperumal has an amylose content of 27.7! which is the highest for any rice variety. Amylose is a type of resistant starch, meaning it is not well digested and absorbed in the small intestine. Instead, it’s fermented by bacteria in the large intestine, thereby limiting spikes in blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol… This is why our forefathers and the Ayurveda community always recommended
This is why it is called “divine rice.” It certainly is a blessing.
It is rich in proteins and nutrients, including potassium, vitamin B, and iron. -Nutrition Data. Energy (Kcal) KJ , Protein (g)- 9.31 ± 0.63, Fat (g)- 2.67 ± 0.21, Available carbohydrates (g)- 70.42 ± 0.52, Dietary Fiber (g)- 3.48 0.02
Health benefits
(01)
Diabetes
Pachchaperumal is associated with a reduced risk of several diseases, including Type 2 diabetes. Recent studies are starting to look at brown rice varieties such as pachchaperumal and diabetes in particular.
(02)
Heart health
Pachchaperumal rice is high in magnesium content, which is good for your heart, “Magnesium” is an important mineral for regulating blood pressure and offsetting sodium in the body. Therefore, it’s no surprise that whole grain consumption is associated with healthier carotid arteries and blood pressure levels. “Furthermore, rice is abundant in phytonutrient plant lignans, which may protect against various diseases, including heart disease.
(03)
Digestion and gluten-free diets
Pachchaperumal rice contains 88 percent of the recommended daily amount of manganese. “Manganese is an important mineral that helps digest fats,” it also contains 3.5 grams of fiber per cup, which is 14 percent of the daily recommended intake. Fiber is well known for its digestive benefits. It helps keep bowel movements regular, reduces constipation, and helps keep the bowels healthy. Furthermore, the rice is “naturally gluten-free,” according to the USA Rice Federation. This makes it a popular staple of gluten-free diets.
(04)
Energy
Pachchaperumal rice is rich in protein. “Unlike refined grains, which are missing about 25 percent of the grain’s protein, and are greatly reduced in at least 17 key nutrients, those eating the most whole grains have significantly higher amounts of energy.”
Additionally, rice is a slow-release carbohydrate, which can help maintain blood sugar levels and keep energy consistent.
(05)
Cholesterol levels
Pachchaperumal acts as an agent, lowering bad cholesterol levels. The oil in the rice plays an important role. This study looked at volunteers with moderately elevated cholesterol levels and concluded that the rice bran oil lowered their LDL (bad) cholesterol by 7 percent.
The rice’s good fiber content may also aid in lowering cholesterol levels. Fiber aids in digestion, which requires bile acids, which are made partly with cholesterol. As your digestion improves, the liver pulls cholesterol from the blood to create more bile acid, thereby reducing the amount of LDL.
(06)
Cancer
The rice may help lower the risk of cancer, thanks in part to its manganese. “Manganese may protect against free radicals, which are cancer-causing agents,” The phenolic compounds in brown rice are associated with cancer suppression or reduction. Brown rice, such as pachchaperumal and brown rice bran,, had much higher concentrations of useful compounds than white rice.
Rice is particularly associated with a lowered risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Brown rice is a good source of selenium, which may be associated with a reduced risk of colon and prostate cancer. Dietary practices of over half a million participants in 10 Western European countries found that higher selenium levels were significantly associated with lower colon cancer risk.
(07)
Anti-inflammatory properties
Whole grains, including Pachchaperumal rice, have recently been shown to be as antioxidant-rich as many fruits and vegetables. According to World’s Healthiest Foods, antioxidants are known to function as anti-inflammatory agents that can help with everything from arthritis to asthma, according to World’s Healthiest Foods.
This rice, in particular, has been linked with decreased inflammation.
(08)
Weight management
Plenty of fad diets tout the virtues of avoiding carbs, but brown or red rice like Pachchaperumal shows it’s not that simple. This whole grain is a carbohydrate that, studies show, may help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition studied over 70,000 American women free from a serious illness for 12 years and found that “weight gain was inversely associated with the intake of high-fiber, whole-grain foods but positively related to the intake of refined-grain foods.” This reinforces the differences between refined grains and whole grains like brown rice.
Another study conducted in South Korea found that overweight women who replaced one meal a day with a mix of brown and black rice for six weeks lost more weight and showed an increase in good cholesterol and antioxidant activity than those who replaced one meal with white rice.
(09)
Metabolic syndrome risk reduction
A study published in Diabetes Care suggests that eating whole grains may help lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Its symptoms include belly fat, low levels of good (HDL) cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high triglyceride levels. The study followed more than 2,000 people for four years and found that metabolic syndrome was 38 percent lower in those who had high levels of whole-grain fiber. On the other hand, those who had high glycemic indexes from eating refined foods were 141 percent more likely to develop metabolic syndrome.
