The coconut tree is known as ‘Kapruka’ in Sri Lanka as all parts of the tree are very useful and serve many purposes in human life. For example, stems are used as timber for roofs and many furniture constructions, and young and green leaves are used for decorations, ceremonial activities/functions, and religious and mythical functions. Whilst dried coconut fronds are used for roofing on cadjan houses after fermenting in water for a certain period. After boiling young leaves can be used to weave mats and sacs. Flowers can be used for ceremonial activities and the serum extracted can be used after fermenting as liquor and without fermenting as treacle and jaggery. Natural vinegar can be prepared using the halfway fermented serum. Young coconut water is a healthy drink & can extract coconut milk from scraped matured coconut. Coconut oil is extracted from dried matured coconut and the husk is used to produce coconut fibre which is used for many household utensils such as brushes, brooms, cords, mattresses, rugs and many more. Dried matured shells also serve to manufacture many households’ tools like spoons, and ornamental objects, collect latex from rubber plantations and for coconut charcoal. Likewise, all the parts of the coconut tree are useful for human life. Coconut is among the three main export commodities with tea and rubber.
