The name of this mask is Gini. It represents fire, sometimes compared to the Sun, which gives life to the earth. It’s made out of Balzac wood. The Balzac tree is also known as Kaduru, Strychine, /Nux Vomica and the mask symbolizes Sri Lankan authentic traditional handicraft.

    The Gini Mask is made out of natural Balzac wood. This mask is used in traditional stage dramas to symbolize fire. Sometimes it depicts the Sun, which means life on the earth. This is a very colorful mask, and now it is used as a decorative and gift item. On special occasions and festivals, artists perform different types of dance performances in front of the public, wearing these masks and using traditional music to celebrate and make the events colorful.

    Our Sri Lankan masks are 100% handmade, manually carved, with no molding, no machine cut, and hand-painted. Therefore, you do not find 100% similarity with each other and there are slight differences.

    The wood is not chemically treated and it is 100 % natural, lightweight as well as insect resistant.

    The history of Masks in Sri Lanka goes back centuries. It is an old tradition and the art of the mask carving continues through generations from father to son.

    In Sri Lanka’s good old days, people worshipped trees, stones, the Sun, the Moon, and many other mythical things leading to strong beliefs in spiritual powers.

    In earlier days in Sri Lanka, people believed that there were benevolent and malevolent demons who either gave protection or caused illnesses. Different types of masks with different shapes and sizes were created symbolizing mythical spirits that they believed in. They thought that ritualistic performances, wearing these masks and dancing according to different beats of the drums and music, gave them healing powers.

    Today these skilled artisans, their families, and their skills are rapidly disappearing from society and these masks became artistic decorative items.

    With their colorful facades, odd shapes, and intriguing histories, traditional Sri Lankan masks are commonly found to be adorning the walls of local houses. These masks have grotesque and unique features that make them even more interesting. Most masks feature gaping, misshapen mouths as well as sinister, bulging eyes and bright, vivid colors.
