This mask is called “Peacock” and is made out of Balzac wood. The name of the tree is Kaduru /Strychine /Nux Vomica. The mask symbolizes Sri Lankan traditional handicrafts.     In Sri Lanka, peacock masks have a significant place in traditional dramas. Artists have very colorful, vibrant costumes to wear with peacock masks, and the dancing rhythms are different from the other traditional dances. Peacock dance performances can attract anyone of any age group and you can spend hours watching the dances and listening to their songs.     The history of Masks in Sri Lanka goes back centuries. It is an old tradition and the art of the mask carving continues through generations from father to son.

    In Sri Lanka’s good old days, people worshipped trees, stones, the Sun, the Moon, and many other mythical things leading to strong beliefs in spiritual powers.

    In earlier days in Sri Lanka, people believed that there were benevolent and malevolent demons who either gave protection or caused illnesses. Different types of masks with different shapes and sizes were created symbolizing mythical spirits that they believed in. They thought that ritualistic performances, wearing these masks and dancing according to different beats of the drums and music, gave them healing powers.

    Today these skilled artisans, their families, and their skills are rapidly disappearing from society and these masks became artistic decorative items.
